Mansbridge One on One: Jim Carroll

Peter Mansbridge is considered by many to be one of the most trusted faces in Canadian news. In his half-hour interview program called Mansbridge One on One, which still airs on CBC-TV, the renowned anchor and journalist speaks with fascinating people from all walks of life. Since it began airing in 1999, Mansbridge has interviewed politicians, business leaders, authors, activists, artists, journalists, and an eclectic variety of other various notable newsmakers.

It's the year 2000, and the internet "is making the world a very different place for us," says Canadian internet expert Jim Carroll. In this 2000 episode of Mansbridge One on One, Peter Mansbridge interviews Carroll about the past, present and future of the net. The typically optimistic Carroll does express a few fears. He worries the current internet business boom could soon crash in a big way. "There's something massive going on here, but it doesn't mean we need to throw out our collective sanity."

• Mississauga, Ont.'s Jim Carroll was an early internet enthusiast who first went online in 1982. He is an author, columnist, and keynote speaker, and he's frequently quoted by journalists in articles related to the internet and future technologies. His books include: The Canadian Internet Handbook (1994), Surviving the Information Age (1996), Light Bulbs to Yottabits (1999), Get a (Digital) Life (2002) and Ready, Set Done: How to Innovate When Faster is the New Fast (2007). • Carroll was prescient in his fears of a big crash in internet stocks. Now often referred to as "the dot-com bubble," the stock market soared from the late-1990s until 2001 (peaking early in 2000) due to the rapid growth in internet-based businesses. But there was more hype than profit, and by 2001, countless dot-com companies closed down after burning through their initial capital without ever making money. This had a huge impact on the stock market and is now commonly known as the "dot-com bust."
