Mansbridge One on One: Raven Bowen

Peter Mansbridge is considered by many to be one of the most trusted faces in Canadian news. In his half-hour interview program called Mansbridge One on One, which still airs on CBC-TV, the renowned anchor and journalist speaks with fascinating people from all walks of life. Since it began airing in 1999, Mansbridge has interviewed politicians, business leaders, authors, activists, artists, journalists, and an eclectic variety of other various notable newsmakers.

Early in 2001, Canadians were shocked by the story of an 11-year-old prostitute rescued while working the streets of Vancouver. But according to Vancouver activist Raven Bowen, who works with a group called Prostitution Alternative Counselling and Education, this wasn't an unusual situation. In this 2001 episode of Mansbridge One on One, Bowen shares some sad but true stories about what life is like for these young prostitutes. "Richard Gere is not coming to pick you up," she says. "Pretty Woman? They lied."
 • The shocking story of the 11-year-old prostitute in Vancouver broke in February 2001. According to a Canadian Press article, the girl had been abducted from Portland, Ore., and brought to Vancouver. She was plied with drugs and forced to sell herself on the streets. "Our officers said this was the most horrific case they'd seen and the youngest victim they'd seen," said Const. Anne Drennan, spokeswoman for Vancouver police, in the CP article."She was very badly treated while on the streets."
  • Raven Bowen has long worked to educate and counsel Vancouver's sex-trade workers, and has been very vocal over the years in fighting for the improved health safety of prostitutes. In 2005, Bowen ran as a Green Party candidate in the B.C. election, but did not win.
