The Food Show: The great meat debate

For 12 years, The Food Show took listeners inside the food business, exploring news and trends in food production, marketing and consumption. Beginning in 1978, host Jim Wright – a former circus ringmaster – navigated through the gastronomical gamut as listeners learned all about the food business. From important news to tips on camel-milking or microwave cookery, The Food Show offered a wealth of information on anything food-related.

David Suzuki, who in 1978 is host of CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks, talks to two American professors with opposing views on eating meat. Does meat eating reduce life expectancy? Is it a vital part of our diet? Well, it depends who you ask. The two men have put plenty of research into this question, and both have compelling and conflicting answers. 
• Early fossil examples show humans once had teeth only suited for a vegetarian diet, but evolved into a meat-eating stage around 2.5 million years ago.

• Scientists say this change triggered many changes in humans, including an improved ability to process fat and cholesterol and a smaller jaw. But there's an expensive downside: our teeth don't fit well into this smaller jawbone, which is why so many people need dental work.
