Expodition: Saying adieu to Expo 67

In Canada's centennial year, the city of Montreal played host to the world with Expo 67. "Man and His World" was the theme of the 1967 world's fair, a six-month celebration that drew 50 million ~ visitors to a site on three artificial islands in the St. Lawrence River. Broadcast from Expo's International Broadcasting Centre, Expodition was CBC Radio's daily guide to the pavilions, the people, the pleasures and the problems of Expo 67.

The troubadours had to go. Planned as a diversion for people waiting in lines at Expo 67, the roving performers ended up creating inconvenient crowds of their own. They were one of the few hiccups at the Montreal world's fair, but virtually everything else at Expo was a roaring success. In this audio souvenir from the last edition of Expodition, our four reporters reminisce with laughter and a hint of regret.
• In this clip, the reporters remark on the popularity of the telephone pavilion. Operated by the Telephone Association of Canada, this pavilion's main attraction was Canada 67, a 360-movie experience. Nine cameras projected the movie on screens that encircled a 1,500-seat theatre, taking viewers inside the RCMP's Musical Ride, onto the deck of the Bluenose, to centre ice at a Leafs-Canadiens game, and tumbling over Niagara Falls.
