Dave Brubeck Quartet and The Seekers at Expo 67

In Canada's centennial year, the city of Montreal played host to the world with Expo 67. "Man and His World" was the theme of the 1967 world's fair, a six-month celebration that drew 50 million ~ visitors to a site on three artificial islands in the St. Lawrence River. Broadcast from Expo's International Broadcasting Centre, Expodition was CBC Radio's daily guide to the pavilions, the people, the pleasures and the problems of Expo 67.

Free entertainment is one of the hallmarks of Expo 67, and in today's episode of Expodition, a free jazz concert featuring Muddy Waters and the Dave Brubeck Quartet is underway. Reporter Lynn Jackson talks to teenagers about jazz, and reporter Martin Bronstein interviews saxophonist Paul Desmond. Later, Bronstein hears about the Australian music scene with bassist Athol Guy from The Seekers
• The Dave Brubeck Quartet, which had been a trio until Paul Desmond joined in 1951, disbanded in 1967 just months after this interview.

• Desmond went on to perform with other groups, and in 1974-75 played with Canadian jazz guitarist Ed Bickert in Toronto.

• After Desmond's death in 1977, he bequeathed all future royalties from Take Five to the International Red Cross.

• Expo 67 hosted an impressive range of big-name international performers. Among them were French singer Maurice Chevalier, actors Marlene Dietrich and Sir Laurence Olivier, and dancers Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. Opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, still relatively unknown then, also played Expo 67.

• San Francisco rock band Jefferson Airplane, then at the peak of their success, also played Expo 67.
