1993: The Great One, two and three

For avid fans of the fastest game on ice, the National Hockey League's regular season is a mere dress rehearsal for the real campaign: the Stanley Cup playoffs. Here's a look at 10 of the most memorable moments from NHL postseasons past.

Of the record 50 hat tricks Wayne Gretzky accrued over his NHL career, none was sweeter than the three-goal set he potted in Game 7 of the 1993 Campbell Conference finals. The Great One's Los Angeles Kings take to the ice at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens for the game that will decide which team goes on to face the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup finals. Gretzky scores a goal in each period, with his third tally holding up as the eventual game winner.
• Wayne Gretzky's three goals in Game 7 of the 1993 Campbell Conference finals registered as the eighth postseason hat trick of his career and set a new NHL record. The previous record had been held by Montreal Canadiens legend Maurice Richard.
  • After defeating the Maple Leafs in Game 7, the Los Angeles Kings went on to lose to the Montreal Canadiens by a margin of four games to one.

• Gretzky has cited his Game 7 performance in the 1993 Campbell Conference finals as the greatest of his NHL career.

• Prior to his retirement in April of 1999, Gretzky padded his postseason hat trick record with an additional pair of three-goal sets, for a total of 10 playoff hat tricks.
