1980: A dynasty is born

For avid fans of the fastest game on ice, the National Hockey League's regular season is a mere dress rehearsal for the real campaign: the Stanley Cup playoffs. Here's a look at 10 of the most memorable moments from NHL postseasons past.

The New York Islanders amassed a wealth of highlights over the course of the team's four-year dynasty as perennial Stanley Cup champions, but none remains as celebrated as Bob Nystrom's 1980 Cup-winning tally. With 13 minutes remaining in the first overtime period of Game 7, Nystrom forces a turnover with a solid hit on Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Bob Dailey, then takes a cross-ice pass from teammate John Tonelli and deflects the puck past goaltender Pete Peeters for the most famous goal in Islanders history and the team's first ever Stanley Cup title.
• Thore Robert Nystrom was born Oct. 10, 1952 in Stockholm. An original member of the New York Islanders, the right-winger joined the team in 1972 and played his final game during the 1985-86 NHL season. • Although a strong regular season performer, Nystrom is noted for his playoff heroics which include scoring four overtime game-winning goals.

• Nystrom's 1980 Cup winning goal, along with his tenacious playing style and dedication to the Long Island community, earned him the nickname "Mr. Islander." The team officially retired his jersey number 23 on April 1, 1995.

• Since 1991, the New York Islanders have presented the Bob Nystrom Award to the Islanders player who, according to the team's official web site, "best exemplifies leadership, hustle and dedication." Past winners of the honour have included Brent Sutter, Steve Thomas, Claude Lapointe, Steve Webb, Adrian Aucoin and Benoit Hogue.
