April 26, 1988: Game 5, Adams Division final
With the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins facing off once again in a meeting of historic Eastern Conference rivals, the CBC Digital Archives looks back at key players and performances of the past. Revisit some classic Habs-Bruins matchups, as well as interviews with team legends Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur and Ken Dryden of the Canadiens, and Willie O'Ree, who broke hockey's colour barrier with the 1958 Boston Bruins.
Archrivals Boston and Montreal clash for the fifth straight time and Boston is
dominating the series, winning three straight after being blown out 5-2 in Game
1. The Bruins are looking to avenge four straight playoff defeats, including
three series sweeps by Montreal, but history is on Montreal's side: Boston
hasn't won a playoff series against the Habs in 45 years. In this clip from
Hockey Night in Canada, we join an intense third period as Boston tries
to finally beat its nemesis.
• The Bruins defeated the New Jersey Devils four games to three, to advance
to the Stanley Cup finals against Edmonton. The Oilers won in four straight
games to capture their fourth championship.
• On May 24th, during the scheduled fourth game of the finals, a power failure at the 16:37 mark of the second period suspended play. Game four was replayed in Edmonton two days later.
• In 1989, Montreal and Boston faced off again in the division finals. The Canadiens won four games to one, eventually making it to the finals against Calgary.
