George Chuvalo calls it quits

George Chuvalo is the greatest Canadian Heavyweight champion of all-time. Noted for his toughness, he fought all the greats and nobody – not Joe Frazier, George Foreman or even Muhammad Ali – ever knocked him out. Outside the ring, however, life dealt Chuvalo several crushing body blows: he lost three sons to drug addiction and his wife to suicide. Yet, just like in the ring, Chuvalo has refused to go down by using his story of personal pain to help others fight drug addiction. Remarkably George Chuvalo, the People's Champion, is still standing.

After a lifetime spent in the fight game, George Chuvalo has called it quits. In this CBC Radio clip he looks back on a remarkable career spent in boxing and describes how he dealt with pain inside the ring. Chuvalo also talks about the fights he lost by decision that he feels he should have won. "I've been shafted more than a couple of times but that's part of life," laughs Chuvalo.
• On Dec. 11, 1978, Chuvalo successfully defended his Canadian Heavyweight Title, knocking out George Jerome in the second round. It was Chuvalo's last pro fight as he announced his retirement shortly after. Chuvalo won eight of his last nine fights -- all by KO -- losing only a 12-round decision to Muhammad Ali in Vancouver.

• During his boxing career Chuvalo had a record of 73 wins (64 by KO), 18 losses and two draws. Amazingly, he was never knocked out or even knocked down to the canvas in any of his 93 pro fights.

• Chuvalo was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He was also inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.
