Queen Elizabeth observes Canada's Centennial

media clip
Dominion Day, the anniversary of Canada's founding as an independent nation, is cause for celebration any year. But the party is especially grand in 1967, our Centennial year, and a very special guest has come to celebrate with Canadians: Queen Elizabeth. In this excerpt from a CBC-TV special live broadcast on July 1, 1967, a formally attired Queen addresses Canadians as part of a solemn Centennial ceremony on Parliament Hill.
• Queen Elizabeth departed for a private lunch after making this speech, standing up in an open convertible with Prince Philip and waving to the throngs of people. She returned later in the day, wearing a more casual white sheath dress, to cut a towering birthday cake in front of some 25,000 onlookers. She was saluted by songwriter Bobby Gimby and a chorus of children singing his iconic Centennial song "Canada".

• The Queen's 1967 visit to Canada lasted six days. In addition to her presence at the festivities in Ottawa, she travelled to Montreal for Expo 67. Listen to a CBC Digital Archives clip about the frenzied preparations for the Queen's visit to Expo.

• The Queen has been in Canada on July 1 on seven occasions, in 1959, 1967, 1973, 1990, 1992, 1997 and 2010.
