Should religion be taught in schools?

Canada has struggled with the role of religion in public schools throughout the past half-century. The debate in recent decades is complicated by the fact that Canada is now home to so many different religions. From questioning the recitation of the Lord's Prayer in class to wearing ceremonial daggers at school, the right to exercise one's religion in public school classrooms remains the subject of fierce debate in Canada.

Diversity in Ontario increases in the 1970s due to rising immigration by non-Christians along with the federal policy of multiculturalism. In an effort to respect the diverse religious backgrounds of students, many public school boards begin to emphasize "moral education" based on common values, and to reduce emphasis on religious education, including traditionally Christian religious practices such as reciting the Lord's Prayer and Bible readings.
. Education in Ontario had a religious dimension from the beginning. The first elementary school in Ontario was French and Catholic, and was founded in 1786 in the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at what eventually became Windsor.
