Father Guido Sarducci dishes about the new pope in 1978
From all over the world, Catholic cardinals travel to the Vatican to choose the man who will lead the Church. CBC Digital Archives presents coverage of four such elections, from the election of John XXIII in 1958 through Paul VI in 1963 to two conclaves in 1978: John Paul 1 and John Paul II.
• As part of its coverage for the 1980 U.S. presidential election, CBC Radio hired Sarducci as a weekly commentator on the program Variety Tonight. He told the Globe and Mail that his salary was "in three figures."
• The actor seen at the start of this clip is Victor Garber, a Canadian stage and film actor who portrayed Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor in the 2012 movie Argo.
