Cold Cases: Cédrika Provencher, Trois-Rivières (2007)

They are the heartwrenching stories that shock whole communities, bringing waves of fear and sorrow that can linger for years. Disappearances and unsolved murders devastate Canadian families in all parts of the country, creating anger and suspicions that may never be put to rest. In collaboration with the CBC News series Canadian Cold Case, the CBC Digital Archives presents a collection of stories from unsolved crimes in Canada.

Two days after nine-year-old Cédrika Provencher vanished while out on her bike, the people of Trois-Rivières are out in force. It's a scorching summer day, but over 300 volunteers have turned out to look under porches, in local fields and in parks for any sign of the girl. There's still no trace of Cédrika, although her red bike was found behind a garbage bin. As this 2007 report from CBC-TV points out, fears for Cédrika's life are mounting as the hours pass.
• Cédrika Provencher, who was nine years old at the time, disappeared on July 31, 2007. Early in the search, witnesses reported her asking for help finding a man's lost dog. Four other girls also came forward to report that a stranger had asked for their help tracking down a dog.
  • In June 2009, two years after the disappearance of Cédrika Provencher, Quebec lawyer Guy Bertrand became involved in the case. He offered a reward of $170,000 for information leading to the discovery of Cédrika or her abductors and pledged total confidentiality for informants.

• As of October 2009, no trace of Cédrika Provencher has been uncovered.
