CBC Radio 3 goes live on the internet

media clip
It's not your parents' CBC Radio. In June of 2000, CBC's new media division launches a brand-new service aimed squarely at the under-30 crowd. In fact, CBC Radio 3 isn't radio at all; it's a series of websites including justconcerts.com and newmusiccanada.com. In this clip, a Radio 3 producer describes a third site, 120seconds.com, which she hopes will become a place where young Canadians will submit their own short films and share their stories.
• Based out of Vancouver, CBC Radio 3 was originally proposed in the mid-1990s as both an online and radio presence. But the radio part of the plan was axed in November 1999 and the service proceeded as an online-only project.
  • In a Globe and Mail article from June 28, 2000, CBC vice president Alex Frame (also seen in this clip) predicted that within five years, 40 per cent of Canadians would be "listening to audio on wireless Internet-linked devices." The following year, Apple released the iPod.

• As of 2010, CBC Radio 3 remains a vital part of CBC's music programming and is still based out of Vancouver.
