Trudeau on Trudeaumania

In 1968, a swinger ran for prime minister. Canadians had never before seen anyone like Pierre Elliott Trudeau in the House of Commons. He brought youthfulness and a promise of change. He also brought a Mercedes-Benz. Women and men were mesmerized by him. But Trudeau's appeal extended beyond Parliament. He became a political pop star, attracting admirers whose dedication rivaled that of Beatles fans. Canada called it Trudeaumania, a phenomenon that lasted until his marriage in 1971.

After retiring as prime minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau grants very few interviews and leads a reclusive existence. He spends most of his time at his Montreal home or his office at Heenan Blaikie law firm. Trudeau's former wife Margaret once said he is "destined for eternal solitude." The CBC documentary Memoirs captures a rare Trudeau interview, in which he talks about the Trudeaumania days.
• Trudeau's popularity declined considerably during his term in the 1980s. His National Energy Policy especially angered Alberta's prosperous oil purveyors.
• After a pensive walk during a snowstorm, Trudeau retired from politics on June 30, 1984. • Less than two months before his death, Trudeau went on a wilderness retreat with old friends and his son Sasha.

• Trudeau died at the age of 80 on Sept. 28, 2000. He suffered from Parkinson's disease, prostate cancer and a severe bought of pneumonia.
