Presidential Inaugurations: Obama's new way forward

It takes 35 words to become president of the United States. The presidential inauguration ceremony marks the beginning of a new term in the Oval Office. CBC Digital Archives has selected reports from Washington, D.C. that capture the swearing in of a new president from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barack Obama.

"Greatness is never a given. It must be earned." Barack Obama takes the oath of office and delivers a passionate speech calling on all Americans to a new era of public service. In these two reports we learn about the Obama inauguration and get reactions from the people who attended it.
• Over 1 million people attended the inauguration and parade route. As a result, a state of emergency was declared for Washington, D.C.

• At noon, the official White House website changed completely in design. Up until noon the old design still featured George W. Bush.

• Two hundred and forty thousand tickets for dedicated seating near the stage were distributed free for the inauguration.

• The Toronto Star reported that the estimated cost of the inauguration was $150 million US. Of that amount the Obama inaugural committee raised $41 million US.
