Presidential Inaugurations: George Walker Bush takes oath of office

It takes 35 words to become president of the United States. The presidential inauguration ceremony marks the beginning of a new term in the Oval Office. CBC Digital Archives has selected reports from Washington, D.C. that capture the swearing in of a new president from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barack Obama.

The inauguration of George W. Bush takes place under bad weather conditions. It is overcast, with a light rain continuously falling on the participants. In this report from Adrienne Arsenault we learn that the weather did not put a damper on the people who arrived in Washington to hear Bush's speech.
• Bush was governor of the state of Texas from 1995 to 2000 before winning the Republican nomination in 2000. His principal opponent was John McCain, who ran would run for president in 2008.
  • Bush is the eldest son of George H. W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States. His brother Jeb is the second oldest and was elected governor of Florida in 1999, serving two terms.

• After two visits to attend G8 summits and a cancellation due to the war in Iraq, Bush made his first state visit to Canada on Nov. 30, 2004. Prime Minister Paul Martin welcomed him.
