Marxist-Leninists seek mass appeal

Far left, far right, or just plain far out, small political parties help put the "multi" in Canada's multiparty system. Since confederation, more than 100 parties have run candidates in Canadian federal elections, but most so-called "fringe" parties have never sent a single member to Parliament Hill. CBC Digital Archives looks at some of the many "other" parties that vied for office in the second half of the 20th century.

Make the rich pay. For the Marxist-Leninist Party (M-LP), it's almost that simple. But, says party leader Hardial Bains in 1980, a concerted effort on the part of the news media to block any discussion of serious issues makes it nearly impossible for their message to reach the Canadian public. Still, in spite of the persecution, Bains says support grows with each election, especially among those that don't usually vote. A whopping 179 candidates will present the M-LP program to the masses, and they'll be urging the working people to join together to build a new Canada without the domination of finance capital.
