Oka: A year later

In the summer of 1990, all eyes were on the small town of Oka for a showdown between native people, Quebec police and eventually the Canadian army. The violent clash was triggered by something as simple as a golf course and as complicated as native burial traditions. The Oka Crisis drew worldwide attention, catapulting native land rights into the spotlight. (Note: Some clips contain explicit language.)

Oka Mayor Jean Ouellette, whose determination to expand the golf course triggered the Oka Crisis, reflects on the events a year later. He tells Ann Medina on CBC Radio's As It Happens that he stands by his decision to call in the Quebec police, a move that led to the death of Corporal Marcel Lemay. Mayor Ouellette says he was only acting responsibly.
. Mayor Jean Ouellette told CBC Radio's As It Happens that he blamed the federal and the provincial governments - especially the Quebec minister for Indian Affairs, John Ciaccia, for not doing enough to prevent the Oka Crisis.

. Ciaccia wrote about his personal involvement in a memoir titled The Oka Crisis: A Mirror of the Soul.
