Punk Rock in Canada: Toronto's Nightmare
In 1977, a new form of underground music emerged from Canadian basements and garages. Journalists called it punk rock. It was kids with boot polish in their hair, playing out-of-tune guitars and questioning anything established — parents, government, The Beatles. Decades later, critics praised the once-criticized scene for starting a tradition of do-it-yourself indie rebel music.
"If I wasn't in rock 'n' roll, I'd be making you guys lie on the floor right now and I'd be taking your wallets," he says. In Britain, however, The Sex Pistols will no longer be as cash-strapped. They've signed big-buck contracts with $100,000 advances. And to think, six months before recording God Save The Queen, Sid Vicious had never before played the guitar.
• Johnny Rotten's famous last words on stage, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" referred to manager Malcolm McLaren's inability to provide a hotel room or a decent sound check.
• McLaren named the band after John Lydon, a green-haired teenager nicknamed "Sex," whose grotesque teeth later earned him the title Johnny Rotten.
• Bassist Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979, a few months after he allegedly stabbed and killed his wife Nancy Spungen while he was high on heroin.
• The remaining Sex Pistols members reformed in 1996 to produce the album Chaos.
