Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts with charisma

media clip
Yannick Nézet-Séguin knew he wanted to be an orchestra conductor at the tender age of 10. So he worked hard toward that goal -- and now, just in his early 30s, he's already rising to the top of his field. In this 2007 CBC-TV report, we get to a glimpse of the charismatic Nézet-Séguin in action. Reporter Sandra Abma tells us about his stellar career so far, and describes how "this joyful, boyish conductor is trying to take the stuffiness out of the classics."
• Yannick Nézet-Séguin was born in Montreal in 1975.

• His first professional position was as chorus master and assistant conductor of the Opera de Montréal in 1998 at the age of 23. Two years later, he was appointed artistic director of the Orchestre Métropolitain du Montréal. • In 2008 he was appointed music director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

• A 2010 Montreal Gazette article called Nézet-Séguin "the hottest young conductor in the world," while a 2010 New York Times article called him "a strikingly gifted young Canadian conductor whose international career has lately assumed a meteoric velocity."
