Jann Arden, singer-songwriter
Gordon Lightfoot, Celine Dion, Oscar Peterson, Sam Roberts, Anne Murray, The Barenaked Ladies. What do these artists all have in common? They've all won Juno Awards. Since 1970, the Junos have been held each year to celebrate excellence in Canadian music. In honour of the annual ceremony, the CBC Digital Archives has pulled together a diverse collection of radio and TV clips that shine the spotlight on some notable past Juno winners.
• Arden struggled for years to make ends meet by fronting various bands on the bar circuit. The 25-year-old got her break when Neil MacGonigill, Ian Tyson's former manager, signed Arden in 1987. • In 1993 she received critical acclaim with the release of her debut album, Time for Mercy. A few years later she gained international fame with her breakthrough hit Insensitive.
• She has won numerous Juno Awards, including Songwriter of the Year (1995, 2002) and Female Artist of the Year (1995, 2001) • Arden has written two books of poetry: If I Knew, Don't You Think I'd Tell You (2002) I'll Tell You One Thing, and That's All I Know (2004).
• In 1999 Arden opened a diner in Calgary with her younger brother called The Arden. In 2003, the restaurant became the backdrop for a Canadian TV reality show called The Arden Diner, a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of the hectic restaurant. In 2005, The Arden closed due to their hectic schedules. • Arden has a home in Calgary.
