Coneybeare cooks with Madame Benoit

They come into our living rooms via the radio or TV set, speaking directly to the kids with a friendly, familiar tone. It's a rather intimate set-up, which is why the hosts of popular children's programs often hold a special place in our hearts — even long after we've grown up. From Mary Grannan to Ernie Coombs, the CBC Digital Archives has compiled a collection of radio and TV interviews featuring some of the CBC's most cherished children's program hosts.

"I am the 'very best friend' of Jerome the Giraffe and Rusty the Rooster on The Friendly Giant show," says Rod Coneybeare in this 1969 clip from CBC-TV's Take 30. Actually, he's the puppeteer and voice for these characters -- but since there may be some young viewers watching this afternoon program, he's careful with his words so as not to "break the illusion." In this clip, Coneybeare makes fondue with Take 30's resident cooking expert, Jehane Benoît. After the cooking session, he discusses his new children's show called The Bananas.
• Coneybeare was co-creator of The Bananas, collaborating with Robert Gibbons, who was also the producer of CBC-TV's Mr. Dressup. The Bananas never really caught on with viewers, lasting only a few episodes before it was cancelled.
  • Coneybeare is best known as the puppeteer and voices for Jerome and Rusty on The Friendly Giant, which aired on CBC from 1958 until 1985. In addition to The Friendly Giant and The Bananas, Coneybeare also co-hosted CBC Radio's The Rod and Charles Show (with Charles Winters) during the 1960s, and hosted a summer replacement show for CBC Radio called Man to Man in 1959.

• After the cancellation of The Friendly Giant in 1985, Coneybeare did a lot of voice work for popular children's cartoons throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. These cartoons included The Adventures of Tintin, Babar, The Magic Schoolbus and The Adventures of Super Mario Brothers. Notably, he was the voice of Avalanche in the popular 1990s American cartoon X-Men.
