Michael Crichton: scientific storyteller

Michael Crichton is among the premier fiction writers of his generation. In his novels, humans run with dinosaurs on a jungle island or daring thieves shanghai a cache of gold from a moving train. His new novel Timeline is a medieval time travel adventure. But these fantastic adventures spring from a serious scientific mind, one buzzing with concepts of physics, time travel, cloning and more. Listen in to this 1999 interview as the bestselling author offers a fascinating discussion on science, the significance of history and the danger of fantasy.

• Michael Crichton was a graduate of Harvard Medical School, which served him well in writing successful medical thrillers like The Andromeda Strain and A Case of Need. His TV series ER won a Peabody Award in 1995.
  • Ten of Michael Crichton's novels have become films, although Jurassic Park was far and away the biggest hit. As of 2008, Jurassic Park was the tenth highest-grossing film of all time, earning over US $900 million.
