House Concerts on All the Best

Over the next couple of weeks All the Best will feature two house concerts showcasing several Maritime singer/songwriters.  The house concert setting is a unique venue that allows the artists and the audience to share a very special intimacy that you just can't experience in a big concert hall.

April 15th you can hear the talents of Norma MacDonald and Ian Sherwood and on April 22nd listen in for Erin Costelo, Molly Thomason and Ashley Condon.

All the Best celebrates National Poetry Month

Thumbnail image for P1011090.JPGApril is National Poetry month and this week on All the Best host Shauntay Grant helps celebrate as she presents several Maritime poets, spoken word artists and hip hop rappers.  From an event called Rhymes and Riffs we'll hear from Desiree Adams, Verena Rizg and hermit of the woods.  And from another CBC East Coast session -  the poetic stylings of Kyle Mckenna with his band The Caravan.  Tune in Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. for All the Best in the Maritimes on CBC Radio One.

Maritime Musical Families - Part 2

The second installment of our 'Maritime Musical Families' starts off with the Plaskett family ... Joel and his dad Bill.  Then we dip into Shannon Quinn's CD called 'The Irwin Lake Sessions' where Shannon collaborates with her father Tony bringing their take to several traditional tunes.  And to wrap up the show host Shauntay Grant will feature the Smith family from North Preston ... Jimmy Rankin featured on East Coast Session

Rankin 04.jpgMulti award winner Jimmy Rankin is featured on All the Best this week.  It's another in our East Coast Sessions recorded in CBC's Studio H.  Recently Jimmy was nominated for 8 East Coast Music Awards and a Juno nomination for Best Country Album as well.  When you hear this performance you'll understand why.  Jimmy is joined by guitar player Jamie Robinson and they perform several tunes from Jimmy's recent cd and a few Rankin Family tunes for good measure.  Part of this concert can be viewed online at http://www.cbc.ca/download/

Three East Coast Sessions on All the Best

CBC presented three East Coast Sessions in Studio H in Halifax and All the Best will feature them over the next several weeks... starting with Rhymes and Riffs.  We brought spoken word artists (from left to right) hermitofthewoodsVerena Rizg and Desiree Adams together with Shauntay Grant and the Geordie Haley Trio.  The entire evening rocked with poetry and music collaborations. Tune into All the Best, Sunday at 4 p.m. on CBC Radio One in the Maritimes.

What's better than a work by Mozart on All the Best ?

Two works by Mozart!

And that's just what we have this Sunday.  Join Shauntay Grant as she features Symphony Nova Scotia with guest conductor James Sommerville.  James also picks up the french horn as soloist for Mozarts' Concerto for Horn and Orchestra and then round outs the show with Mozarts' Prague Symphony.

January 29th - Two piano playing composers on All the Best

Two talented piano players who also compose their own music are featured on All the Best this week.  One who is well established in his career and the other is just starting out.

Kim Dunn has 30 years in the music biz and we've got him in concert from a CBC Music Session recorded in Studio H in Halifax.

Later in the show Shauntay Grant will present 14 year old Owen Maitzen.  He's just getting his feet wet but already he's making waves with his playing and his original compositions.

January 22nd - Two PEI singer/songwriters are featured

January 15th - "Diomira" in concert

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for P1011156.JPG This week on All the Best we've got a great performance by "Diomira" - a collaboration between three very talented artists recorded at the Lilian Piercey Concert Hall in Halifax.

Pianist Dinuk Wijeratne teams up with percussionist Nick Halley and accordion player Joseph Petric to perform some of his own original compositions. Wijeratne's works combine classical precision and contemporary improvization, with jazz and middle eastern overtones.  The results are powerful and dynamic.

January 8th - Maritimers with recent CDs

Happy New Year everyone.  We have some wonderful music coming up on this weeks show.  Shauntay will spin a few recent cds featuring talented Maritimers, including Natalie MacMaster with her new CD 'Cape Breton Girl'.  We'll also sample Dylan Guthro's new release and Ria Mae's as well.  And then we'll round out the show with a couple tunes from the Modern Grass Quartet.  Sounds like a great hour of music no matter how you cut it.  Tune in Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. on CBC Radio for 'All the Best' in the Maritimes.

December 11th - Holiday fare for everyone

Host Shauntay Grant presents another show filled to the brim with Maritime musicians performing their own original seasonal tunes as well as several old favourites.  As Shauntay says .... "Holiday music never really goes out of style".  From Rose Cousins, to the Barra MacNeils, to a fantastic version of 'My Favourite Things' by Jamie Gatti and the late Doug Riley, there is sure to be something to get you into the holiday spirit.
