The Marriage of Figaro by Opera da Camera

Marriage of Figaro.jpgA young Montreal opera company aims to spread a love of opera around the city, and the province.

Since it began in 2011, the Opera da Camera has taken its concerts on the road.

Next weekend, the company will be producing its first complete opera, Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, at the RialtoTheatre.

It's a comic opera that tells the story of one 'mad' day - the day of Figaro's marriage - when scheming between the nobility and staff at the palace of a Spanish count threatens to destroy more than one couple. Of course, it ends happily.

But you probably know all that. The Marriage of Figaro is one of the most performed operas worldwide.

Joining Sonali Karnick in studio this morning to talk about the Opera da Camera's production are co-artistic director Kathrin Welte -- she also plays Figaro's mother - and Valerie Bélanger who plays Figaro's bride-to-be.

Boogat (aka Daniel Russo Garrido): latino rap

Boogat by Guillaume Simoneau.jpgQuebec rapper, writer and producer, Boogat grew up in Beauport.

He had another name then -- Daniel Russo Garrido.

Boogat's first three albums were in French. But he's just produced his first full-length solo album in Spanish.
It's called El Dorado Sunset.

Boogat has won a Juno nomination with the Roberto Lopez Project, and with another band, he even had a song listed in the Favourite 100 Songs of 2011 by NPR and the Washington Post. But his Latin-tinged music and Spanish rap is now finding an audience beyond Quebec and the US too.
