Freaky Sundays: Nature vs. Nurture

asgoodasitgets.jpgJack Nicholson's character in the movie As Good As It Gets, Melvin, wrestles with some pretty big personality issues.

But was Melvin genetically predetermined to develop OCD? What role is played by his environment, and what the world projects back at him?

Dr. Roberta Palmour is fascinated by these questions.  She's a professor of psychiatry and human genetics at McGill University, and she's the  latest guest in All in a Weekend's "Freaky Sunday" series.

This Friday, she'll be giving the Freaky Friday lecture at the Redpath Museum, titled "Nature versus Nurture: Do genes determine your personality?"
Dr. Roberta Palmour spoke with Sonali Karnick.

Dave's Faves: The Tea Hunter

Kevin Gascoyne.jpgWe've gone back into the All in a Weekend archives and pulled out one of Dave Bronstetter's best-loved interviews from the past year.

Kevin Gascoyne is the co-owner of Camellia-Sinensis, a tea importer based in Montreal and Quebec City. Every spring Kevin and his partners get to set off across the world hunting for new and exciting teas to bring back to their shops.  Last April, Dave reached Kevin on the phone in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The Teenage House Party Dilemma

David Eddie.jpgSomewhere tonight ...  maybe right next door to you .. teenagers are having a house party.
Whether the teens, or the house, emerge unscathed can depend on how the parents handle the question: "Do you mind if I have a few friends over?"
Or if that question gets asked at all.
It's a rite of passage for teens and parents everywhere...one that David Eddie just survived.
He's an author whose most recent book is called  'Damage Control'.
David spoke with Sonali Karnick about his son's "friendly gathering."

The Puck Drops Here

Hockey Day logo.pngIt's Hockey Day in Canada today. People are strapping on their skates across the country in their own communities to celebrate the national game.
The centre of it all this year is Prince Edward Island but there are games and events going on everywhere, including right here in Montreal. CBC Montreal, in partnership with the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation, wants to get kids moving! We've been collecting your new or used skates to be used as loaner skates at the four free outdoor community built by the foundation.
But the celebration is from coast to coast with some great NHL hockey games in between.
Scott Russell from CBC Sports Weekend spoke with Sonali Karnick from Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Dave's Faves: Georges Laraque

Georges Laracque.jpgWith Dave Bronstetter's impending retirement, we've gone back into the All in a Weekend vault and plucked one of his best-loved interviews from the past year. We're revisiting a chat Dave had with Georges Laraque. Most people will remember Georges from his hockey days as a rough and tough enforcer in the NHL, but after competing in the "Battle of the Blades", a television show that paired up figure skaters with hockey players, Georges found a new life on the ice.
