5-25-77: growing up with Star Wars

5-25-77-4.jpgIn 1977, a teenaged boy named Patrick Read Johnson was making Super-8 movies in his backyard and dreaming of becoming a filmmaker.

He set out from Ilinois to meet a special effects pioneer in Hollywood.
But he got much more:  a chance encounter with Stephen Spielberg, a tour of George Lucas' special effects company, Industrial Light and Magic, and an advance screening of a very special movie -- Star Wars.

The ground-breaking sci-fi movie premiered on May 25th, 1977, and now Patrick Read Johnson pays hommage to that date in the title of his new movie, 5-25-77. It's his story, a coming-of-age story, and he's been trying to tell it for more than 10 years.

Patrick Read Johnson is in Montreal for two screenings of the movie at the Fantasia film festival. He tells Elizabeth Robertson his story.
