The World Before Her
As part of the Magnus Opus documentary series, Cinéma du Parc is presenting The World Before Her, by Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja.
The award-winning film looks at two parallel realities for women in India. It follows young women who are training to become the next Miss India and others who are training at a Hindu fundamentalist boot camp, exclusively for girls. In both cases, the women are groomed and lectured on what their values should be.
The World Before Her also takes on India's male-dominated society, where women are frequent targets of violence. It takes on new meaning, in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of a student in Dehli and a second case being reported today.
Nisha Pahuja will join a discussion about the film via skype, after the 2 p.m. screening at Cinéma du Parc today along Dawson College cinema professor Dipti Gupta.
