The Girls in the Band: women in jazz
She's just one of the many talented women featured in an award-winning documentary called "The Girls in the Band".
It shines a light on the women who were professional musicians, composers, arrangers and conductors in the golden age of jazz.
The film shows not only their unsung talent - but the sexism and racism they faced, and the attitude that women musicians were just a novelty act.
The documentary is playing tonight at the Montreal International Black Film Festival.
Director and producer Judy Chaikin spoke with Elizabeth Robertson.
