Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. award: Zab Maboungou

It's the language of the body that is being honoured this year by Montreal's Black Theatre Workshop.

Every year at this time, the Black Theatre Workshop highlights the contributions of a few individuals in the community. This year, their Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Achievement award goes to dance pioneer Zab Maboungou.

Zab Maboungou is a choreographer, dancer, and philosophy professor - as well as the artistic director and founder of the Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata more than 25 years ago.

She grew up in Congo-Brazzaville in Africa and came to Canada 40 years ago but she has contributed to the field through dance companies and workshops around the world. She's received various honours from Africa to New York City and Toronto.  Zab Maboungou will accept this latest award at the Vision Celebration Gala next Saturday.  She spoke with host Sonali Karnick before the event.
