A new country

marc-landmine.JPGToday marks the creation of a brand new country: the Republic of South Sudan. Southerners voted to split from Sudan in a referendum last January.

The mostly Christian south and the mostly Muslim north have been fighting for more than two decades. More than a million and a half people have been killed.

Now, people there are hoping for a fresh start.

David Widgington is a Montreal journalist who is passionate about southern Sudan. He travelled there in 2009. And he maintains a web site called southsudaninfo.net.
