Not-so-typical holiday flick picks

We hope that most people actually look forward to being with their families over the holidays. And maybe after all the shopping and the baking and the running around is done, enjoying some down-time with a good movie too.

But unfortunately it seems like television programmers couldn't wait until the day after Hallowe'en to start running It's a Wonderful Life on a continuous loop and by now it feels like you've seen every Christmas movie ad nauseum.

In the coming days, some of you may sit through even more of this seasonal fare with family and friends, and rarely can everyone agree on which of these holiday films is the funniest, or most touching, or delivers the message of what the "Holidays are all about".

In fact, it's hard to even define what a traditional holiday is anymore without offending somebody. But if you dare to navigate the social minefield that is holiday cinema, our friends Tim and Di from Elgin Video came in to offer some alternatives to the norm.

Robert reviews the Descendants

It's a drama garnering Oscar buzz already, but wanna hear some no-holds-barred, honest thoughts about The Descendants? Our film reviewer Robert says, "I haven't seen or heard so many people sniffling and crying and honking at the movies since I Am Sam back in 2001."

Does the movie deserve the hankies? Er, maybe not: "If they give a special Oscar this year for overkill, The Descendants is a no-brainer," Robert says. You can hear more of his thoughts in the review below.
