With Holt's closing, what's best for retail in Centretown?

holt2.jpgThe luxury retail chain Holt Renfrew is closing its Ottawa store in January. The company made the announcement yesterday, saying it plans to expand in other cities. The store has been in Ottawa for 78 years, and is inside the complex at 240 Sparks Street.

Holt's isn't the only big retail store to leave Sparks Street in recent years. Last year, at the other end of the retail spectrum, it lost Zellers. We wondered about the bigger impact of these changes on Centretown, beyond the Sparks Street Mall. Ian Capstick's communications company MediaStyle is nearby at Bank and Slater. He's a member of the board of the Bank Street BIA, and he joined us with some ideas.
