D is for Dinner: Ethiopian dishes from Hareg Cafe

hareg.JPGWhen you walk into Hareg Cafe & Variety Store in the Glebe, Bemnet Abraha will be there, guaranteed. He'll be programming some great East African music, selling you spices, stocking the counters, running the cash, AND cooking the food.


Because Hareg Cafe and Variety Store IS Bemnet Abraha. And Alan decided to visit him for a taste of his Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine, and for his "recipe" for a fava beans (Bemnet doesn't really believe in measuring...).

Benmet's fava beans

  • boiled, crushed fava beans
  • yogurt
  • feta cheese
  • chopped red onions
  • green peppers
  • red peppers
  • tomatoes
  • garlic
  • berbere spice mix
  • olive oil
  • vinegar
  • cumin

Serve with injera.
