The high costs of policing in Eastern Ontario

Most of us take it for granted that if we call 911, a police officer can be at our side in minutes. But that high level of service comes at enormous cost to taxpayers. They'll be footing the bill next year when OPP officers get an 8.5% raise, making them the best-paid police in the province. And costs tend to be even higher in small towns and cities that don't have a contract with the OPP.

CBC News has looked at police spending across Ontario, excluding First Nations communities. And some towns and cities in eastern Ontario are leading the pack in per capita spending. Seven of them make the top 20...and Gananoque is number two, with spending of $535 per person.

Erika Demchuk is the mayor of Gananoque, and we reached her earlier today.
