Happy New Year's from All in a Day

We're off ringing in the new year's in style, so you won't hear All in a Day at our regular time on Monday Dec 31st, or Tuesday, January 1st.  Instead, you'll hear some great national programming.  And we'll return with our regular show on Wednesday, January 2nd.  Happy New year to all!

Snowed in at Gatineau Park

Sentier 1 près du relais Western 26 déc. 2012.JPGA walk in the park took a very different turn for a couple of snowshoers last night. The pair set off yesterday afternoon on an off-limits trail near Meech Lake in Gatineau Park.

Then, in all that snow, they lost their way...

Two experienced outdoorsmen went in to try and rescue them...but they TOO got disoriented. All four ended up spending the night in the park -- where temperatures felt like -19C with the windchill.

A rescue operation found all four people early this morning - one of whom had to be airlifted out to be treated for hypothermia.

We talked with Adam Sherman who was part of the rescue team that helped find the missing adventurers. Then we checked in with Renee Bonnehumeur who is with Gatineau Park and the NCC.

(The image above is of trail #1 at Gatineau Park after Thursday's snow storm!)

Gearing up for the Bell Capital Cup

It's become something of a tradition at this time of year.

In the week between Christmas and New Year's, thousands of kids descend on Ottawa to spend their days living and breathing hockey at the Bell Capital Cup, the world's largest minor hockey tournament.

Now in its 14th year, the event attracts teams from across Canada and from as far away as Hong Kong, Germany and Finland. In fact, close to 400 teams are participating this year.

Rory Fitzpatrick is a former NHL-er who coaches the Rochester Mavericks. He, his 11-year-old son Brady, and 11-year-old Jack Feola made the trek to Ottawa to compete this year, and they stopped in at the studio just before heading off to their first game.

Final political panel of 2012: a year-end round-up

It's been a year of fighting, deal-making, and sleepovers in the House of Commons. From the Trudeau-Brazeau boxing match, to the friction over F-35s, to the all-nighters over the omnibus budget bill...there's certainly been plenty of action on the Hill.

Our political panel was there for it all - and they joined us once more in 2012 to reveal their favourites from the year in politics that was.

Nick's last tour of the Christmas lights

xmas-lights-aiad.jpgEarlier this week, a long, white stretch limo pulled up outside of CBC Ottawa -- one of those stretch-limos that look like an extended SUV. Nick Newton and about 9 of his friends and family had invited Stu to come along for a tour of Ottawa's Christmas lights, plus a stop by a high-end restaurant to pick up up some fresh oysters and champagne. Sort of a holiday tour, and a tradition for Nick, too.

But this year is different. Nick Newton has lung cancer, and doctors say he has about 2 weeks left to live. This is our Christmast lights tour with maybe the most upbeat, and inspiring, man we've ever met.

D is for Dinner - Kale Mashed Potatoes

kitchenmambo.jpgThat's Candice Bernes, taking a break at her brand new shop Kitchen Mambo in Old Ottawa South.

Candice dropped by the studio to show Stu how to make a side dish that's guaranteed to leave your holiday dinner guests asking for another helping.

Kitchen Mambo Potato Kale Mash

Boil 6 potatoes (if organic, cut them up and keep the skins on for additional nutritional value)

2 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped

Strain and mash with 2 big handfuls julienned kale leaves (no stems)

3/4 c almond milk (I use homemade raw almond milk)

3 tbsp nutritional yeast

Salt and pepper to taste

Enjoy!

Almond Mylk
1 cup raw almonds, soaked 6 hours (I soak them overnight), rinsed
4-5 cups water
2 medjool dates (minus the pits!)
1/2 tsp vanilla (I use Ultimate Real Raw ground vanilla bean)
1 1/2 Tbsp hemp seed (not necessary but I like the milky flavor it adds)
Blend well in a high speed blender and strain through a nut mylk bag*.
*Nut mylk bags can be bought at many health food stores for about $12. You can also use a paint straining bag from a paint store for about $2. Wash it very well. The mesh is not quite as thin and it will leave a bit more sediment behind (I have never found that a problem for mylks).

Jimmy Rankin's Christmas traditions

JR_Stu_1_WEB.jpgThere are, of course, no shortage of Christmas albums to choose from, but if you were to add another to your collection, Tinsel Town by Jimmy Rankin would be a good bet. It's a rootsy, Celtic, country-tinged collection of classics and originals, and Rankin is bringing them to a concert at the NAC tomorrow. First though, he stopped by our studio.

Forrest, were Forrest to sport a mustache and a leisure suit...But anyway, Lockhart has just published "geriatric sex thriller" A Touch of Grey Down There, which is his take on the whole 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon, starring senior citizens. Lockhart and Forrest, who seems to be handling Lockhart's affairs, both joined us in studio.

The Trappist beer that everyone wants to get their hands on

westvleteren12.jpgIt's been called the best beer in the world. The Westvleteren 12 is brewed at the Trappist abbey of St. Sixtus in Belgium. But here's the thing -- you can't just buy it at your local beer store. You have to call the abbey in advance...get your name on a list...and then go to Belgium YOURSELF and pick it up at the doorstep.

So you can imagine how excited some Ottawa beer drinkers were when they found out that two LCBO locations would be offering it up for sale today. The pricetag? $76.85 for a six-pack...and the limited supply didn't last very long. But Justin da Silva managed to snag the last case avaiable. He's a brewer at the Clocktower Brew Pub, and braved the lineups just to get his hands on some Westvleteren.

D is for Dinner goes to Oaxaca

Mitla.pngAna Collins is on a mission to prove there's more to Mexican food than cheese and meat tortillas. Her new takeout restaurant Mitla, in Vanier, serves up the food of the Oaxaca Valley. Finding the ingredients to make that cuisine in Ottawa is no easy feat. But Ana cooked up a meal for Alan including Trucha frita con salsa de ajonjol.

Ana's recipe is below, and you can find her restaurant at 62 Barrette St. That's in Vanier near Beechwood Ave. and the Vanier Parkway. The restaurant also has a page on Facebook. Listen here for Ana's conversation with Alan (and her colourful description of the food scene in the Oaxaca Valley).

Trucha frita con salsa de ajonjol
(Fried trout with sesame sauce)

Sauce

Dry roast 1/2 cup of sesame seeds until they are popping in the pan. Set aside. Dry roast two or three dry chile de arbol peppers and three garlic cloves, unpeeled, until you can smell the roasted garlic. Puree the three ingredients with some salt and 1/2 to 1 cup of water. Then return to the pan and simmer until thickened.

Fish

Place one fillet in the frying pan and saute until lightly browned and cooked through, approximately 2 minutes each side. Transfer to a platter and keep warm while cooking the rest of the fillets.

To serve: put a fillet on each plate and pour over the sauce. Serve with rice, a fresh salad (with a simple vinegar and oil dressing), and steamed vegetables. Garnish with cilantro and lime wedges, and don't forget the tortillas!

How realistic is too realistic when it comes to horror film?

makeup-artist-remyfx.jpgGenerally it's hard to find many people who want to defend a serial killer who tortures and mutilates his victims...But what about when that serial killer is a work of fiction?

Right now in Quebec, filmmaker and special effects and makeup artist Remy Couture is on trial, charged with possession, production and circulation of obscene materials. They're for films and photos on his website that tell fictional horror tales...but with makeup so realistic that it had police believing it could be real.

Has Couture crossed a line with his work? It's being described by the Crown as "an attack on fundamental Canadian values". So what's the line between horror and obscenity? And when is realistic TOO realistic in the world of horror?

Howard Sonnenberg is the founder and editor of Ottawa Horror.com, and a senior sound engineer for many films through Atomic Audio.  Jennilee Murray is an actor who's been transformed into a corpse in a few films, including Lee DeMarbre's Smash Cut. And Angie Mills is a makeup artist who takes care of those transformations and special effects as a makeup artist on horror films, including the film Clown that's being filmed in Ottawa right now. All three joined us with their thoughts on the line between horror and reality.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer on what it costs to employ a public servant

We've heard a lot about layoffs in the public service these last several months. But while the government is cutting jobs, the cost of compensating each remaining employee is expected to keep going up. Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page explores that in his latest report, released this morning. He found that last year, taxpayers spent an average of 114,100 dollars to compensate each full-time federal public servant. And he projects that number will grow to about 130,000 in the next three years.

Kevin Page joined us in the studio earlier this afternoon. We started by talking about that 114-thousand-dollar figure...and he explained what's included in that number.

Parents' perspective on the one-day teachers' strike

Picket lines will replace lines of school buses outside elementary schools this week. Teachers in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board are set to walk out on Wednesday. And on Thursday, elementary teachers in the Renfrew County District School Board will follow suit.

The one-day strikes are in protest against Bill 115, which limits teachers' pay as well as their ability to strike. The union has promised to give parents seventy-two hours' notice of each walkout. But some parents are still scrambling to come up with alternative childcare arrangements. Riley Brockington has a daughter in Grade One at Bayview Public School in South Ottawa, and Jennifer Nemet has two children in Elementary School in Riverside South.

Political Panel, Dec 6: All those pointing fingers in the House

It wasn't much to look at, really -- some finger-pointing, apparently accompanied by some "unparliamentary" language. Yesterday's altercation in the House of Commons between NDP and Conservative politicians was caught on camera, but -- perhaps thankfully -- not on tape. Still, it stirred up plenty more finger-pointing after the fact, with MPs on both sides using the classic playground defence of "he started it".

To pick over the week's happenings on the Hill -- dignified and otherwise -- we were joined by our Political Panel -- Julie van Dusen and Rob Russo.
