A brush with the royal couple...28 years ago

A memory from Alan, from 1983:

As Loverboy played on radios elsewhere, I was ready to capture on record my first-ever royal visit. Poised with a Kodak 110 camera at the Rockliffe Air Base, along with the rest of the Grade 5 class from Viscount Alexander, awaiting the arrival of Princess Diana.

Kept at a great distance we waited, as she emerged in white hat and blue dress from the plane. The three snapshots that resulted contain the commentary scrawled on the back: "The Princess Diana's plane lands at OUR base airport!"...followed by "A tiny figure dressed in blue, otherwise known as Princess Diana, steps from the plane" and lastly, the photojournalistic triumph: "Princess Diana waves as her car rolls by and away she goes, Jun '83, Base airport". That photo: a hand waving, half an eye peering out of a darkened window and 3/4 of a white hat...

A piper's song for Will & Kate

bethany.jpgBethany Bisaillon, pipe major for the Sons of Scotland pipe band, has played for royalty before. But this is the first time she's had the privilege of composing a tune for a royal couple -- she'll be debuting it for William & Kate at a citizenship ceremony on Canada Day. We convinced Bethany to come into our studio, pipes in hand, for a little sneak preview of the track...

Hugh Masekela: five decades, still learning

Hugh-Masekela-at-the-Mont-007.jpgThere may have been listeners in the audience at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on Tuesday who know Hugh Masekela's horn from the hip, urban sounds of Black Coffee. But there may be those more familiar with his work from the 90's...Or the 1980's...Or the 1970's...Or the 1960's...Well, you get the idea. Over the past five decades, fans of the great trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer Hugh Masekela have been guided through jazz, pop, mbaqanga, blues, dance, and more.

Just last week, the Guardian Newspaper in England posted their list of the 50 key events in the history of world and folk music. There at #27 is a photo of a young man in a striped shirt, eyes and mouth wide open, at the Monterey International Pop festival of June 1967. The man from that photo, Hugh Masekela, joined us in studio.

Jill Barber's Mischievous Moon

BARBER.jpgA rolling line of strings flow all the way through Jill Barber's latest album, Mischievous Moon. And in fact the string section on this album often seems a few shades darker than on her last record, Chances, adding just a little bit of haunting drama to songs that could have sounded light and hopeful.

Jill has never been a stranger to writing a song about a haunted heart, after all, but when she shifted from folk and roots music to jazz and big band, there seemed to be more songs about the sunshine and light side of romance. Now on Mischievous Moon some of that darker tone might be back...Jill Barber was back in town for the Ottawa Jazz Festival, and she joined us in studio to talk about that darkness & light.

Can violence be treated like a disease?

He battled tuberculosis in San Francisco. Cholera in Mogadishu. AIDS in Uganda.garyslutkin.jpg

So when Dr. Gary Slutkin returned home to Chicago, public health was on his mind. But so were the constant headlines about gun violence in the city. What if, he wondered, we could treat violence the same way as an infection?

Dr. Slutkin's musings turned into a program called Ceasefire. It has since spread beyond Chicago, and on a visit to Ottawa, he visited our studio to explain what it's all about.

Political Panel, June 24: Filibusta-rama

At airtime on Friday, the NDP's filibuster wore on and on and on...with MPs dozing off at their desks and bringing comfy clothes to the House as the debate over back-to-work legislation for Canada Post employees continued. Julie and Rob, however, were as fresh-faced as ever as they talked about what the filibuster could mean for opposition-government relations in parliament.

Helping victims of sexual violence in the DRC

CYI_Poster.jpgA new report by the Thomson Reuters Foundation names Afghanistan as the world's most dangerous country for women. The Democratic Republic of Congo comes in a close second. In the past, a United Nations representative has even called the DRC the "rape capital of the world."

Desire Kilolwa is orginally from the DRC. He has close family members who were victims of sexual violence during the ongoing conflict. Which in part, is why he helped start the Congo Yetu Initiative. They run a shelter and a medical clinic to help women and children recover from violence.

For more information about his fundraising efforts you may call 613-600-2421.

The Search for Support for Stroke Patients

50,000 Canadians suffer strokes every year. Some die. Some recover completely. But most are left with lasting health effects -- paralysis, memory loss, trouble speaking and many other complications.  But, as a report we told you about last week has revealed... those impairments aren't the only challenges patients face once they leave the hospital. Even getting information about after-care isn't always easy for patients and their caregivers.

It's a challenge Suzette Argo knows well. Her mother suffered a stroke about seven years ago. She and sister have helped care for her since then.  Suzette Argo shared her family's story and introduced us to the organization that they have grown to depend on, the Stroke Survivor's Association of Ottawa.

Libyan students in Ottawa are running out of money

The future of more than five hundred Libyan students studying in Canada is rather uncertain these days. The students all arrived here on scholarships from the Libyan government, and until this month, they received monthly cheques to cover their expenses.

The cash came from the Libyan government and was managed by the Canadian Bureau for International Education. But with the political unrest in Libya, that money is gone now. Nwara Abdul-Hamid is finishing up her masters degree in Linguistics at Carleton University. She moved to Canada from Libya three years ago, and we spoke to her about how the money shortage is affecting her studies and her family.

The Walk of trafficked women: a Fringe play within a play

In the new play called "The Walk," three individuals - a nun, a writer, and a film director - struggle to write a play about human trafficking. Together, they encounter haunting stories of trafficked women from all over the world.

One of them is of Celestine, a Nigerian woman who has come to Canada with her son. For eight years, she was trafficked in Italy. And Celestine's story was inspired by real interviews with trafficked women. Catherine Cunningham-Houston is the playwright of "the Walk"  and Natalie Fraser-Purdy is the director. The Walk debuts tonight at the Ottawa Fringe Festival, but first both joined us in studio.

You can see more information about The Walk on their blog, and you can find the scheduled performance dates on the Ottawa Fringe Festival web site.

D is for Dinner: Rhubarb Muffins

Jodi Lariviere is the blogger behind Simply Fresh Ottawa, and this spring she's been raving over rhubarb. She was in our studio today to share her recipe for Rosemary Rhubarb Muffins, which you can find below.

  • 7 - 8 stalks of Rhubarb
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 TBSP maple syrup
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled and mashed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 TBSP baking powder
  • 1 TSP baking soda
  • 1/4 TSP salt
  • 1/2 TBSP fresh rosemary finely diced
  • 3 cups whole grain flour
  • 1 cup water

Wash and cut rhubarb into 1/2-inch pieces. Add to a small pot with sugar and 1/2 cup water. Boil until rhubarb has broken down into almost a jam-like texture. Let cool.

In a large mixing bowl add the cooled rhubarb mixture to all other ingredients. Add the cup of water slowly until you reach your desired muffin batter consistency. Depending on the moisture level of the rhubarb mixture you may need to add more or less water at this stage.

Bake in a lined or oiled muffin tin at 350 for 25 minutes or until a fork inserted into the centre of the muffin comes out clean.

Can Paul MacLean revive the Sens?

maclean-081210-620.jpgPaul MacLean spent 11 years as a player in the NHL, he scouted for St Louis, and he's been a head coach in other hockey leagues. But he spent the last six seasons as assistant coach of the Detroit Red Wings. And maybe most importantly, as part of that gig, he knows what it feels like to win the Stanley Cup.

Hopefully MacLean can bring some of that winning fortune to his new gig as head coach of the Ottawa Senators. And his surroundings will probably be familiar, too -- more than 30 years ago, MacLean got his start in junior hockey when he was drafted by the Hull Olympiques. We spoke with MacLean on Tuesday to get his memories on those early days, and his hopes for the Sens.

The Hockey Sweater's round-trip to Space

TheHockeySweater.jpgThe opening lines of Roch Carrier's classic short story The Hockey Sweater grace the back of the Canadian five-dollar bill.

But back in 2009, those words took a detour...to the International Space Station

Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk brought the book along with him on his last mission. But it wasn't until this week that he got the chance to hand over the space souvenir to Carrier.

Political Panel, June 10: Rerun season

Right around this time, so many things you see on TV are in reruns. And it seems like this week had a few political rerun elements: a budget that seemed awfully familiar, the Auditor General's report which we heard about long before its release...And then, the familiar image of a woman holding a stopsign with Harper's name on it.

Of course this time around, that woman was NOT a protesting senate page, but Stockwell Day's wife Valerie, and the sign said "WE LOVE HARPER". That would be, in case you couldn't guess, at the ongoing Conservative convention. Our political panel was at the convention, and they joined us in studio... without any signs.

Playing the role of a medic and a patient in Afghanistan

franklin.jpgThe current War and Medicine exhibition at the Canadian War Museum explores the challenges of medicine on the battlefield. And our guest on Thursday served with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan as a medical technician with One Field Ambulance.

But in January 2006, Master Corporal Paul Franklin also became a patient. Franklin had been driving an armoured jeep carrying diplomat Glynn Berry, and fellow soldiers. A suicide bomber attacked the Canadian Forces convoy, killing Berry and two Afghan civilians, and injuring 13 others -- including Franklin and two of his comrades.

Master Corporal Franklin delivered a talk about being both a medic and patient on the battlefield this week, but first he chatted with Alan about how his injury, and subsequent recovery, has actually helped soldiers become better trained in first aid.

Browse Ottawa's Corner Stores

Abbas_Final_2.png

Over the past year, Colin White made about a dozen trips to local corner stores.

But most of the time, he didn't bother going in. He'd set up a stool on the side walk. Flip open a note pad. And start sketching.

And tonight, his series of ink drawings of Ottawa confectionaries opens at the Raw Sugar Cafe in Ottawa's Chinatown. The vernissage runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Student Inshar Khan's poem stuns schools city-wide

It started out as an extra-curricular assignment -- a teacher at Ridgemont High School asked Inshar Khan to write a poem. Not only that, but perform it in front of hundreds of principals who were meeting in Ottawa. And despite his nerves, Inshar managed to hold the attention of everyone in attendance.

Inshar's poem was supposed to be a one-off performance, but word about his rhymes spread quickly. And before he knew it, he started touring his poem around to school audiences all over the city. On Tuesday, he just wrapped up that tour before an audience of Grade 7s and 8s at Vincent Massey school. But Inshar, AKA I-Khan, agreed to an encore performance here in Studio 12.

Queensway-Carleton Hospital defends its surgery slowdown

The operating rooms at the Queensway Carleton Hospital will be a lot quieter this summer, for the second summer in a row. The hospital is reducing surgeries to save costs, and the union that represents workers at the Hospital are raising red flags -- from a backlogged waitlist for surgeries to laid-off workers. But the CEO of the Hospital says the reductions are necessary, and will not have as much as an impact as the union fears. We spoke with Tom Schönberg on the show on Tuesday.

Oh, where to start with last week's action on the hill? The election of the youngest-ever Speaker of the House, Andrew Scheer? Jack Layton's promises of in-House civility? A new throne speech based mostly on old campaign promises? Or perhaps a single senate page, with a bright red "Stop Harper" sign in hand... Julie and Rob were in, as always, to weigh in.

The Youth Activist Forum wants you to re-think your assumptions about disability

As a little girl in a wheelchair, Jes Sachse squirmed when people called her sweetie or -- even worse -- underestimated her, whether it was in a gym class or mathematics. By the time she was in high school, Sachse rebelled against the pats on the head and patronizing tones.

Today, she's a self-described queer artist with tattoos, piercings and lots of wit. Sachse is in Ottawa to take part in a forum that aims to bring together young people with and without disabilities, and she joined us on Thursday's show to talk about people's assumptions when it comes to disability, art and sexuality. Also joining her was forum organizer Erica Carson.

D.I.Y. Obituary

On Wednesday, Eric King's obituary appeared in the newspaper. It isn't the name, or the black and white photo, that grabs your attention. It is what the obituary says. It begins, "While writing one's own obituary may appear unusual to say the least, I wanted to do so because I have been so fortunate in my life and wish to express my gratitude..."

Eric King died Monday after a long battle with cancer. He is being mourned by his family in Bath, outside of Kingston. But he is also remembered well by those in the soccer community. King was the former head of the Canadian Soccer Association here in Ottawa. Alan spoke with his long-time friend Tom Nease.
