Miriam Toews' Irma Voth

irma voth.jpgIn Miriam Toews' latest book, Irma Voth, the title character is a Mennonite, living on a remote settlement in the Mexican desert, whose existence is complicated when a film crew arrives.

Through the course of the novel, we watch as Irma's relationship with the filmmakers, her father, her sister and her husband are transformed, often by the decisions she makes. It's interesting that Diego the director says both "We are creating a small world", and that there is a "small thing" that is the difference between life and death. Through the book Miriam Toews shows us how those small decisions can indeed lead to life and death moments...And she joined us in the studio to talk about it.
