School in One Room
There was a time when rural children got their entire primary education in one room, with a single (often-harried) teacher handling all eight grades.
That era ended for good when the last one-room schoolhouse in Ontario closed in 1992.
But the memories of those times are kept alive in a new book by Ottawa schoolteacher, Joy Forbes.
Perseverence, Pranks and Pride is full of first-hand accounts and anecdotes of life in one-room schools in the Ottawa Valley. You can check out Joy's stories on her web site, and you can listen to her reminisce with Alan below.
