Riding Profile:

Lethbridge West comprises the west half of the city of Lethbridge. The municipal boundaries form the north and west borders of the riding, while the south border is the Oldman River. To the east, the riding is divided from Lethbridge East mostly by 13th Street. In 2004 redistribution, voters living between 13th Street in the west, Mayor Magrath Drive in the east, 10th Avenue in the south, and the CPR line in the north were shifted to Lethbridge East.

Retail provides the most jobs in Lethbridge West, followed by health and social services. At $52,729, household incomes are well below the provincial average, and more than 11 per cent of residents are considered low income. Immigrants comprise just over 10 per cent of the population, while more than 62 per cent were born in Alberta. (2001 census)

Political History:

This riding has gone to the Tories since 1975. Incumbent Clint Dunford slipped into office in 1993, defeating Liberal Michael Dietrich by 109 votes — the narrowest margin in that election. In 1997 he enjoyed a comparatively comfortable 914-vote win over Liberal Leslie Vaala. In 2001, Dunford and Vaala were rematched, with the incumbent winning by just under 1,200 votes. And in 2004, Dunford fended off Liberal Bal Boora, 4,411 votes to 3,629.

Dunford's predecessor was John Gogo, who held this seat from 1975-93, serving in cabinet for part of that time.

In 2004, voter turnout was 45.5 per cent.
