2004 Candidates:
Joyce Assen (Liberal)
Dave Dalke (Alberta Alliance)
Stephen Lindop (Green Party)
Katie Oppen (NDP)
Karen Richert (Social Credit)
George Rogers (PC)
Riding Profile:
This riding just south of Edmonton reaches from Leduc in the west to the
area east of Round Hill to the east. Though the riding got a new name
in 2004, the boundaries are essentially the same as the old Leduc riding.
Other communities here include Beaumont and Devon.
Manufacturing and retail are the largest employers in this riding, contributing
to average household incomes of $68,961, slightly above the Alberta norm.
Fewer than one resident in 20 is considered low income. Two-thirds of
the residents were born in Alberta. About seven per cent are immigrants.
German-Canadians are a significant ethnic minority.
Political History:
The old riding of Leduc elected mostly Tories over the past three decades.
Dallas Schmidt was MLA here from 1975-82, serving as minister of agriculture.
Don Sparrow won in 1982, 1986 and 1989 and held numerous cabinet jobs.
In 1993, Sparrow fell to Liberal Terry Kirkland by 939 votes. Kirkland
lost four years later when incumbent Tory Albert Klapstein ousted him
by a 2,000-vote margin. Klapstein won by a 3-1 margin over Liberal Joyce
Assen in 2001, but didn't win the Conservative nomination in 2004.
In 2001, voter turnout was 57 per cent.
