Riding Profile:
Cypress-Medicine Hat is a sizable riding in the southeast corner of the province, bordering Saskatchewan and Montana and surrounding the urban riding of Medicine Hat. Cypress-Medicine Hat was essentially unchanged by the 2004 redistribution. Communities here include Redcliff, Bow Island and Irvine. The city of Medicine Hat, south of the South Saskatchewan River, the Trans-Canada Highway and Carry Drive, are also in this riding.

Agricultural is the major industry here, with retail a distant second. Incomes, at $59,912 for the average household, are slightly below the Alberta norm, although the percentage of low-income residents, at nine per cent, is also below average. This riding has a large number of people who identify themselves as German, at 20 per cent. Immigrants make up about seven per cent of the population, and aboriginals are fewer than two per cent of residents.

Political History:
This riding's Tory roots run deep. Incumbent Lorne Taylor, the province's environment minister, won his seat in 1993, when he defeated Liberal Lloyd Robinson by more than 1,200 votes. Four years later his margin over Beverley Britton Clarke, also a Liberal, was nearly three times greater. The two were rematched in 2001, and Taylor won by more than 5,000 votes. He isn't running in this election. Before 1993, most of this riding's voters were in the old Cypress-Redcliff riding. That seat was occupied by Tory Alan Hyland from 1975-93.

In 2001, the voter turnout was 50 per cent.
