2004 Candidates:
Luann Bannister (NDP)
Lindsay Ferguson (Green Party)
Paul Hinman (Alberta Alliance)
Broyce Jacobs (PC)
Paula Shimp (Liberal)
Riding Profile:
Cardston-Taber-Warner stretches along the eastern two-thirds of Alberta's
border with Montana, from Waterton Lakes National Park in the west to
the area around Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in the east. The Oldman
River forms much of the northern boundary. The 2004 redistribution changed
the riding's shape only slightly, adding a southern part of the old Livingstone-Macleod
riding, consisting of the area between the Belly and Waterton Rivers,
including the communities of Hillspring and Glenwood. Other communities
in the riding are Cardston, Raymond, Taber and Warner.
Agriculture is by far the major industry here, followed by health care
and social services. The average annual income is $51,978. One in 10 residents
is considered low income. More than 15 per cent of the population is of
German descent, nine per cent are immigrants, and more than three-quarters
were born in Alberta.
Political History:
The Conservatives have held the seat here since 1975. Broyce Jacobs earned
5,256 votes in 2001, more than double the number for runner-up John Reil
of the Alberta First Party, who in turn got 10 times the votes of the
New Democrat candidate. In the eight years before Jacobs' victory, Ron
Heirath was the MLA, first in the old Taber-Warner riding and then, following
the 1993 redistribution, in Cardston-Taber-Warner. Tory Bob Bogle held
Taber-Warner from 1975-93, occupying various cabinet posts. In the old
riding of Cardston-Chief Mountain, Tory John Thompson was MLA from 1975-86,
followed by fellow Tory Jack Ady from 1986-93.
In 2001, voter turnout was 53.1 per cent.
