Donna Smith (Liberal)
Riding Profile:
This southwest Edmonton riding is bordered on the south by the city limits,
on the west by the North Saskatchewan River, and on the north and east
mostly by Whitemud Creek, Blackmud Creek and the CNR line. In the 2004
redistribution the riding lost small eastern and northern areas to Edmonton-Rutherford
and Edmonton-Riverview.
This is Edmonton's wealthiest riding, with an average household income
of $111,369, Alberta's second highest, and home values running about $230,000.
Fewer than six per cent of residents are considered low income. College
and university degrees are held by 74 per cent of the adult population,
making this the province's second-best-educated riding. About one in four
people here is an immigrant, and more than 11 per cent are of Chinese
origin. Just over 52 per cent were born in Alberta.
Political History:
Edmonton-Whitemud is represented by Justice Minister Dave Hancock. Hancock
came to office here in 1997, beating Liberal Corky Meyer by more than
2,000 votes. In 2001, Hancock doubled his margin, earning 10,884 votes
to Liberal Bruce King's 6,503. Tory Don Getty was the MLA here from 1967-79,
and then again from 1985-89, during which time he was Alberta's premier.
He was toppled in the 1989 election, losing to Liberal Percy Wickman by
345 votes. Wickman was succeeded by another Liberal, Mike Percy, who was
MLA from 1993-97.
In 2001, voter turnout was 60.4 per cent.
