Riding Profile:
This west-central Edmonton riding straddles the North Saskatchewan River.
The river and Stony Plain Road form much of the northern border, and the
riding is bordered in the east by 109th, 111th and 112th Streets, in the
south by Whitemud Drive, and in the west mostly by Blackmud Creek and
158th, 159th and 163rd Streets. In the 2004 redistribution the riding
gained small areas from Edmonton-Meadowlark and Edmonton-Whitemud.
The main employer here is education, followed by professional work, health
care and social services. The average household income, at $68,936, is
above the provincial average, though one in six residents is still considered
low income. More than 16 per cent of residents are older than 65, the
third-highest in the province. Almost 19 per cent are immigrants, while
55 per cent were Alberta-born.
Political History:
This young riding has been represented by two Liberal MLAs since it was
formed eight years ago. In 1997, Linda Sloan won the seat over Conservative
Gwen Harris by 944 votes. Four years later, incumbent and Liberal Leader
Kevin Taft fended off the PC's Wendy Kinsella by 1,537 votes. Before the
1996 redistribution, most voters here were in Edmonton-Glenora and Edmonton-Strathcona.
The former went Tory from 1971-93 and Liberal from 1993-97. The latter
went to the Tories from 1971-86, the NDP from 1986-93, and the Liberals
from 1993-97.
In 2001, voter turnout was 64.5 per cent - the second-highest in the
province.
