Riding Profile:
This west-central Calgary riding is bordered on the south and west by
the city limits, on the east mostly by Sarcee Trail, and on the north
by Winter Heights. In the 2004 redistribution the riding lost small
areas in the east to Calgary-Bow, Calgary-Buffalo and Calgary-Currie.
The average household income is $99,592, while home values run to $253,000,
Alberta's third highest. Professional services are the big employer,
followed by the oil-and-gas sector. This is the province's third-best-educated
riding, with almost 70 per cent of adults holding college or university
degrees. It has a below-average rate of residents considered low income
at 8.7 per cent. More than one in five residents are immigrants, another
45 per cent were born in Alberta, and one per cent are aboriginal.
Political History:
Calgary-West has mainly voted Conservative for the past 40 years. Incumbent
Karen Kryczka, who isn't running in this election, came into office
in 1997 with a 3,483-vote win over Liberal Paul Adams. In 2001 her win
over Liberal Lorne Neudorf was by more than 9,500 votes. From 1967-85
this was the seat of Peter Lougheed, premier from 1971 to 1985. From
1985 to 1993, Tory Elaine McCoy represented Calgary-West, holding several
cabinet posts. In 1993, Liberal Danny Dalla-Longa squeaked past a PC
opponent and held the seat for one term.
In 2001, voter turnout was 54.6 per cent.
