Political History:
Both of this riding's precursors, Calgary-North Hill and Calgary-Nose
Creek, were solidly Conservative. Calgary-Nose Creek, formed in 1993,
had only one MLA - Health Minister Gary Mar. Mar was elected in 1993
over Liberal Yolande Gagnon, the then-incumbent from Calgary-McKnight,
by more than 1,900 votes. In 1997 he beat the Liberal's Peter Willott
by almost 5,000 votes, and in 2001 he defeated Willott again, this time
by almost 9,000 votes. Mar has served in various cabinet positions over
the past dozen years.
In 2001, voter turnout in Calgary-Nose Creek was 47.6 per cent.
Calgary-North Hill has elected PC candidates since 1971. Incumbent
Richard Magnus won office in 1993, defeating Liberal Tom Dixon by 2,494
votes. In 1997 Magnus won over Liberal John Schmal by 3,082 votes, and
in 2001 his margin of victory was almost 5,000 votes, this time over
the Liberal's Darryl Hawkins. Preceding Magnus were Tories Roy Farran
(1971-79), Ed Oman (1979-86) and Fred Stewart (1986-93).
In 2001, voter turnout in Calgary-North Hill was 48.9 per cent.
