Political History:
This is a brand-new riding. Its precursor, Calgary-Nose Creek, was
formed in 1993 and has known only one MLA, Health Minister Gary Mar.
Mar was elected in 1993 over Liberal Yolande Gagnon, the then-incumbent
from Calgary-McKnight, by more than 1,900 votes. In 1997 he beat the
Liberal's Peter Willott by almost 5,000 votes, and in 2001 he defeated
Willott again, this time by almost 9,000 votes. Mar has served in various
cabinet positions over the past dozen years.
In 2001, voter turnout was 47.6 per cent.
