This new northern Calgary riding is bordered on the north by the city
limits, on the east by Deerfoot Trail, on the south by Beddington Trail,
Beaconsfield Way and MacEwan Park View, and on the west by Simons Valley
Drive, Beddington Trail, Country Hills Boulevard and Shaganappi Trail.
The riding was formed in the 2004 redistribution. Most of the voters
here were formerly in Calgary-Nose Creek and a handful were in Calgary-Foothills.
Retail and professional services earn Calgary-Mackay residents an average
annual income of $80,470 - well over the provincial average. Just under
seven per cent are low income. A little more than 21 per cent of residents
are immigrants - one in six are of Chinese origin, and just under half
were born in Alberta.
This is a brand-new riding. Its precursor, Calgary-Nose Creek, was
formed in 1993 and has known only one MLA, Health Minister Gary Mar.
Mar was elected in 1993 over Liberal Yolande Gagnon, the then-incumbent
from Calgary-McKnight, by more than 1,900 votes. In 1997 he beat the
Liberal's Peter Willott by almost 5,000 votes, and in 2001 he defeated
Willott again, this time by almost 9,000 votes. Mar has served in various
cabinet positions over the past dozen years.
In 2001, voter turnout was 47.6 per cent.
