Riding Profile:
This east-central Calgary riding is bordered on the east by the city
limits, on the south by Glenmore Trail, on the west by the Bow River
and the CPR line, and on the north by 17th and 8th Avenues. The 2004
redistribution shifted many voters formerly of Calgary East into the

of Calgary-Fort now find themselves in Calgary-Egmont. With 41,392 residents,
this is Alberta's third-most populous riding.
Manufacturing and retail are the major employers here, earning the
average household $51,867 - significantly under the provincial average.
In the riding, 18.3 per cent of residents are considered low income.
About 16 per cent of the residents are immigrants, five per cent are
aboriginal, and about 48 per cent were born in-province.
Political History:
This seat has been held by Conservative Wayne Cao since the 1997 election.
In that race, Cao defeated Liberal Shirley-Anne Reuben by 1,593 votes.
In an eight-way race in 2001, Cao garnered 6,740 votes to Liberal Brian
Huskins' 2,004, while the five lowest vote-getters tallied fewer than
600 votes combined. Prior to 1996, voters in this riding had been divided
between the old ridings of Calgary-Montrose and Calgary-Mountain View.
The former had been solidly Tory, the latter swung between the NDP and
Tory representation.
In 2001, voter turnout was 43.1 per cent.
